You know what I hate? When people say they don't like books just because they're popular. That's illogical. The reason these books are popular is because they are good writing. Well, you know, in most cases. *cough cough* Anyway, a victim of this popularity hate is the Hunger Games Series, and in particular, Mockingjay. IF YOU HAVE NOT READ MOCKINGJAY, STOP HERE. Spoilers ahead.
The most common complaint about Mockingjay that I hear is "There wasn't a Hunger Games. It was boring." Ok, so there wasn't a Hunger Games. Did you really expect Suzanne Collins to put a Hunger Games in EVERY SINGLE BOOK? Well, you shouldn't have. Yes, I know, we all got annoyed with Katniss for being so darn emotional. LIke, why do WE have to watch as she has mental breakdowns and hides in closets? Well, its just like real life. We WANT authors to sugarcoat the story and be like, "Oh, yeah, Katniss had mental problems for a few months before the book starts but ya know, she's good now." No. Collins is showing us that yes, the Hunger Games are mentally traumatizing. And yes, they have real effects on the former tributes. OK, so now you say that besides the lack of a Hunger Games and Katniss's mental problems, you thought all the talking was boring. OK. Stop here. Think about Harry Potter. Was there a lot of talking in that book? YES!! Was it dull? YES!!! So Mockingjay is not that bad compared to other books.
So now that we've figured out that Mockingjay wasn't actually that boring, lets talk about the ending. Yes, we are talking about Prim here. Get some Kleenex.
Prim's death was kinda shocking, but then again I kinda expected, having read Gregor (Good series, beside the last book). But then Katniss went into fireball mode, which was weird. Like, get over it Katniss, only your sister died. And ummmm….all those other kids…and…ok whatever. A lot of people died, and GALE KILLED THEM!!!! Indirectly but still, NOT OK!!! OK so Katniss gets over her fireball problem, then votes yes to a new Hunger Games (ummmmm….), then kills Coin. *my head explodes* I DID NOT expect her to kill Coin. Good choice though. Then she tries to eat Peeta (no, really! Read it again!), and goes into ANOTHER mental breakdown. Then she goes back to 12, and marries Peeta, has kids, and….WAIT. Won't those kids lead to some awkward questions? Yep! So thats what I'll be blogging about soon!
So we figured out that Mockingjay wasn't boring, and that Katniss is mentally unstable, and that Gale is a jerk. So you ask, what brought on this random bout of Hunger Gamesness about a book that came out 4 years ago? Well, the movie of course! One word to describe it. AMAZING!! And…..here it comes…..IT WAS JUST AS GOOD AS THE BOOK!!! Yes. I said it. Maybe even better *your mind explodes* Yes. Watch it. Now.
Check back in later to see awkward questions Katniss's kids might ask!!
